1964 Fender Precision -
Olympic White
This remarkable Pre CBS, L series 1964 Fender Precision Bass has weathered the test of time, bearing the scars of its past adventures. While the story behind its journey remains untold, its resilience is undeniable.
Clearly, it had a bout with being close to being fully engulfed in flames. It was apparently close enough to the heat to melt the original nitro pickguard (which is highly flammable) and leave an effect on the overall finish of the bass.
Even with that the bass has survived remarkably well. All the original parts are intact and functional. The truss rod works flawlessly, and the bass plays exceptionally well.
A September 1964-dated neck, an original alder body, all-original electronics, and a pickup reading of 11.13k are all present. The original pots date back to the 20th week of 1964. The gray-bottom pickups are still intact with their original covers. The original tuners and strap button adorn the singed headstock that bears the “transition logo.” The curved rosewood fretboard features clay dot position markers instead of the pearl dots that replaced them as 1964 drew to a close. The neck finish is original, and the heel date remains from September 1964.
The tortoise pickguard endured the fire’s wrath as best as it could but nitrous celluloid doesn’t do well under extreme heat. Both the original guard and the tin underneath are included with the bass (in the case).
The replacement pickguard currently on the bass is a great relic’d repro by Gary G’s custom guards and it looks amazing!
It looks like the body underwent professional refinishing or overspraying sometime before the fire. A slight color difference is visible in the neck pocket where the paint originally left a portion of the pocket unpainted. It appears that the bass was originally white and lightly oversprayed. The cavities do not show significant paint buildup, and there is no sign of any other color in the nooks of the cavities or neck pocket.
The body of the bass is original and in excellent condition, with no repairs. The neck, fretboard, and frets are also in excellent condition, with no repairs. The bridge and saddles are original and in very good condition, as are the tuners. The action is 3/32” on both the first and sixth strings at the 12th fret.
Also included is a non-original Fender molded case in good functional condition.
Here is a great opportunity to own an amazing vintage bass with tons of mojo!
