1964 Fender Precision Bass – Sunburst
All Original, Pre-CBS, L - Series
This is a stunning example of a true pre-CBS Fender Precision Bass, made in August of 1964.
The bass features its original 3-tone sunburst nitrocellulose finish, beautifully aged with natural playwear and lacquer checking that only decades of use can create. The tortoiseshell pickguard has the classic deep red/brown swirl of early ’60s celluloid and has naturally shrunk and aged over time.
The neck is a comfortable maple with Brazilian rosewood veneer fingerboard, still with its clay dot inlays—a defining detail before Fender transitioned to pearloid dots later that year. The headstock carries the correct spaghetti logo decal, tuners, and finish, all untouched and original.
Electronics are 100% stock, including the black-bobbin split-coil pickup with cloth wiring and CTS pots that date to 1964. The sound is exactly what you’d expect from a golden-era Precision—punchy, warm, and authoritative, perfect for studio or stage.
Also included are the chrome Pickup & Bridge covers.
The bass comes in its original black tolex Fender case with orange plush interior, completing the package.
Pre-CBS Fender Precisions are among the most sought-after basses ever made, and this 1964 example checks every box: originality, condition, playability, and history.
